Thomas Nashe in Great Yarmouth

The Elizabethan pamphleteer and playwright Thomas Nashe arrived in Great Yarmouth in late 1597, a fugitive from London after his stage comedy was judged by the Privy Council to be ‘seditious and slanderous’. In this talk, Nashe’s biographer Charles Nicholl celebrates the extraordinary linguistic range of Lenten Stuffe, from the journalistic skills employed in his description of the town to the exuberant rhapsody on the theme of the red herring which has drawn comparisons with Laurence Sterne and James Joyce. As part of the 2018-19 Winter Talks Programme at Time and Tide Museum.
