The Stones that Speak: Exploring the Stories and the Science behind the Geology Collection of Cromer Museum

Former curator and geologist, Martin Warren, will explore specimens from the museum’s collections and put them in context to build up a basic guide to the geology of Norfolk. This new workshop will include an illustrated presentation, specimen handling, stories and discussion.

Norfolk’s Deserted Villages

There are many deserted villages in Norfolk which became depopulated for a number of reasons, even in the 20th century. This popular workshop led by Ian Groves, will examine some of these settlements, the causes behind their desertion, what to look for where a settlement once was and which ones can be visited today. Guided Walk - West Rudham: the Neolithic long barrow

On this walk we will visit one of Norfolk’s very earliest ceremonial monuments, the West Rudham long barrow. This long burial mound was built by Norfolk’s first farming communities over five thousand years ago and still survives to be visited on a remote patch of heathland. We will have plenty of opportunities to discuss what prehistoric people would have seen in this landscape high above the headwaters of the River Wensum. Meet on the village green at East Rudham, outside the Crown Inn (sat nav PE31 8RD). Advance booking essential.

Guided Walk - South Creake: the Iron Age fort

Nestling in the valley of the River Burn in north Norfolk, only 8km from the coast, South Creake is a picturesque village with a long history. During our walk today we will visit the site of a medieval manor, the line of a vanished Roman road, one of north Norfolk’s finest churches and the remains of the great Iron Age fort at Bloodgate Hill. Guided Walk - Castle Acre: The Medieval Town and Castle

The village of Castle Acre lies where the ancient Peddar's Way crossed the River Nar. Main roads no longer pass through it, but the remains of a medieval planned town survive here, along with the magnificent castle and the Cluniac priory. Our walk will explore the surroundings of the village as well as its ancient core as we consider the reasons why Castle Acre grew up where it did. A Beginner's Guide to Fossils

Suitable for beginners, this one-day workshop will use the collections of the Norfolk Museums Service. We will take a romp through the variety of fossils from Norfolk and beyond, from microscopic pollen to elephants. Find out how to collect, curate and identify fossils, how they came to be preserved and what they tell us about our geological past.
